Sharmila Sen since her childhood had a keen interest in art and music. She is a cartoonist, painter and singer. Being fascinated by the various forms of art and handicraft of rural Bengal, she decided to explore, revive and restore those forms of art and handicraft. She has been working with painters, craftsmen and artisans mostly from remote villages of Bengal. She has to her credit several exhibitions and workshops attended by eminent personalities like film directors such as the Late Rituparno Ghosh, Gautam Ghosh and Srijit Mukherjee and poet Joy Goswami.

The masks, cane products and tribal paintings conceived and designed by her found place in the feature films, “Chitrangada” directed by Rituparno Ghosh and “Belaseshe” directed by Shiboprasad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy.

Her exhibitions and effort to revive such art forms have received rave reviews in leading English newspapers like “The Indian Express“, “Times of India“, “The Telegraph” and in leading Bengali newspapers “Ei Samay”, “Bartaman”, “Aajkal”, “Sambad Protidin”  and O bela” and to name a few. The entire effort is to preserve our rich tradition and make us aware and appreciate our rich heritage
